Edith Augusta Holub, age 99, tried very hard to make it to the 100th birthday party that her children had planned for her, but she passed away Thursday, April 14, 2016, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, Iowa. Visitation: 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, April 17, 2016, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City, Iowa. Scripture Service: 3:30 p.m., Sunday, April 17, 2016, at the funeral home. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 18, 2016, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Prairieburg conducted by Father Donald Komboh. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery, Prairieburg.

Edith is survived by her eight children, Sherrie (Tom) Kopecky of Cedar Rapids, Donna (Carl) Koppes of Monmouth, Nicholas (Deborah) Holub of Cascade, Mark (Becky) Holub of Henderson, Nevada, Les (Rebecca) Holub of Bullhead City, Arizona, Rebecca (Kevin) McCarville of Cedar Rapids, Jeffrey (Linda) Holub of Central City, and Kent (Joan) Holub of Lake in the Hills, Illinois, and daughter-in-law, Vickie Holub of Mesa, Arizona; 23 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Howard (Lillian) Burnside of Central City; 10 nieces and 8 nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Wallis & Minnie Burnside; husband, Donald; and sisters, Winnie (Lloyd) Henderson, Mildred (Frank) Smith, and Lois (Marvin) Ellwood; a sister in law, Wilma (Robert) McNamara; a brother in law Ernest (Lynne) Holub; one niece and one nephew.

Edith was born July 28, 1916, in rural Prairieburg, Iowa, the daughter of Wallis and Minnie (Smith) Burnside. She graduated from Central City High School. On April 29, 1941, she married Donald J. Holub in Prairieburg at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Edith worked at the Shirt Factory in Anamosa for a short time before being a homemaker. Don & Edith farmed in both the Prairieburg & Cascade area for over 30 years before they retired in rural Central City. Edith was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church while in the Prairieburg & Central City area and belonged to both St. Mary and St. Mathias Catholic Churches during her years in the Cascade area. Edith was also a member of the Piecemakers Sewing Circle. She loved to embroidery and crochet. Edith treasured the time spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved them each very deeply.

Edith was lovingly cared for in the home of Nick and Deb Holub in Cascade for the past 5 years.
