Edith Pope, 91, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center with her son, Richard; granddaughter, Helen; and her husband, Bill at her side.
She was born Jan. 31, 1922, in McKeesport, Pa., the fifth of six children of James and Annie Loy Brough. Edith graduated from McKeesport High School in 1940 and then attended Douglas Business College. Upon her college graduation she was employed by a local bank as a comptometer operator.
She met William Pope in the early 1940s and they were wed on Sept. 13, 1945, and made their home in Franklin Park, Ill. After marriage, Edith was a hardworking, meticulous homemaker and loving mother to her three children. She also assisted her husband in his dental practice until his retirement.
William and Edith moved to Galena, Ill. in 1975 and then to Cedar Rapids in 2000.
Edith was baptized April 8, 1973 in Illinois as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and was an active door-to-door minister thereafter. She was a member of the McCloud Springs Congregation since moving to Cedar Rapids.
Edith will be remembered for her total devotion to her children and family, her loyal support of her husband through the ups and downs of 68 years, her infectious laugh, her dignified grace and mild, gentle manner. She was an avid student of the Bible and had a strong faith in her Creator’s promises for the future.
Surviving are her husband, William; sons, Dr. Robert (Margie) Pope of Mosinee, Wis. and Dr. Richard (Barbara) Pope of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Jeannie Peabody of Peacham, Vt.; grandchildren, Sarah (John) Forbes, Kathryn Pope (Michael Shaw), Beth (Tony) Rodriguez, Laura Jackson, Bobby Jackson, Lillian Pope, Helen Pope and Elle Pope; a great-grandson, Wesley; and many nieces and nephews.
Also surviving are three sisters, Grace Kalbrenner of North Huntingdon, Pa., Lillian Marshall of Herminie, Pa. and Dorothy Steinmeyer of Hatfield, Pa.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, George; a sister, Mildred; and a son-in-law, Mark Peabody.
After a private family viewing, Memorial Services are scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 2204 26th St. NW. Service will be given by longtime family friend, Larry Sanders of Galena.
