Earl J. Carlton, 88, of Ryan, Iowa, died on Sunday, January 4, 2004, at his home after a brief illness.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2004, at St. Patrick?s Catholic Church, in Ryan with Rev. Dennis Miller officiating. Friends may call from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Wednesday at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester and for one hour before services on Thursday at the church. A rosary will be recited at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Burial in Calvary Cemetery, Ryan. Military rites will be by the Ryan American Legion Post # 652.
Earl was born on May 24, 1915 in Woonsocket, SD, the son of Elmer F. and Phoebe A. (Fee) Carlton. He graduated in 1935 from Alpena High School in Alpena, SD. Earl moved to Ryan in the summer of 1936. On June 30, 1937, Earl was united in marriage to Blanche Houlahan at St. Patrick?s Catholic Church in Ryan. Earl served stateside as a Corporal in the United States Army during World War II. Upon his discharge, he returned to Ryan and drove gas truck for U.S. Baxter before he began operating the DX gas station, which he owned for over forty years. In 1980, Earl sold the business and retired. Blanche died December 25, 1996. On May 27, 1998 Earl and Rose Mary (Benn) Harrington-Carlton were married at St. Patrick?s Catholic church in Ryan.
Earl was a member of St. Patrick?s Catholic Church in Ryan, Knights of Columbus #1962, Ryan American Legion Post #652, and served as scout master. Earl enjoyed woodworking, fishing, golfing and was a St. Louis Cardinal?s baseball fan. He will be remembered as a good-natured man.
He is survived by his wife Rose Mary Harrington-Carlton; four step-children, Patrick Harrington of Las Vegas, NV, Janet (Paul) Rath of Laguna Nigel, CA, Mary (Rick) Ruppel of Story City, and John Harrington of Lakewood, CO; ten step-grandchildren; a sister, Mercedes (Frank) McElligott of Marion; and a brother, Arthur "Art? (Lorraine) Carlton of Taft, CA.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Blanche; a brother, Lester A. Carlton; and a step-daughter, Judy Bickal.
