Duane Arthur Pickering, 66, a resident of 5945 Winslow Rd., Marion, Iowa, formerly of Bryan, Ohio, and Wilmington, North Carolina, died Sunday, July 30, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer. A memorial service will be conducted at a later time near Defiance, Ohio. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.

Survivors include a sister, Diane Pickering (Steve) Montgomery of Marion; nephews, Tom (Laurie) Montgomery of Cedar Rapids and Todd (Renae) Montgomery and their children Peyton and Gavin of Booneville; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn; two children, Mark and Laura; and his parents.

Duane was born September 26, 1939, to Robert and Naomi Meyer Pickering in Defiance, Ohio.

Duane touched everyone he met in a positive and lasting manner. He was a graduate of William Penn College in Oskaloosa and Earlham School of Religion in Richmond, Indiana. Duane was a Quaker minister and was the pastor at Oskaloosa, Iowa Yearly Meeting. He also worked with children in several children?s Homes before becoming Director of the Tri-State Yokefellow House, a retreat center, in Evansport, Ohio. He served in this position for 24 years.

After retiring, Duane moved to North Carolina where he could be near his favorite places, the ocean and the mountains.

A memorial fund has been established for St. Judes Metropolitan Community Church in Wilmington, North Carolina.
