Douglas L. Mathews, 91, died Tuesday, August 14, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. A private memorial will be held for the family at a later date. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include sister, Marilyn (Vern) Wilkes of Watertown, Wisconsin; nieces and nephews, Bob (Nancy) Wilkes of Hales Corners, Wisconsin, Linda Stark of Watertown, Wisconsin, Dan Wilkes of West Brandenton, Florida, and Laura (Jon) McGarvey of Wausau, Wisconsin, 8 great-nieces and nephews; one great-great niece; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Gary Stark.
Douglas was born on November 23, 1920, son of Harry and Iris (Lane) Mathews. He graduated from Wilson High School in Cedar Rapids, in 1938. He received his B.A. from Cornell College, in Mount Vernon and his M.A. from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Douglas served in the United States Army during World War II. He taught English at Franklin High School for 37 years. Douglas was a very private person and a published poet. He loved tending his flower garden and yard.
