Douglas John (Doug) Ruley, 8, of 1220 27th Street NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, went from the loving embrace of his family to God?s loving embrace at home surrounded by his family on December 3, 2006, after a courageous six year battle against leukemia. Memorial Service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 7. 2006, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, by Father John Gossman. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 6, 2006, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with a 7:30 p.m. Vigil Service. Friends may also call from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 7, 2006, at the church.
Doug is survived by his parents; two sisters, Dawn Robinson of Waynesboro, Virginia and Rebekah at home; his maternal grandparents, Ralph & Geraldine Latham of Grand Marais, Minnesota; and his paternal grandmother, Nadine Ruley of Oxford Junction, Iowa.
He is also survived by three uncles, Alan Ruley of Seattle, Washington, Dean (Cheri) Ruley of Oxford Junction, Iowa, and David Latham of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; an aunt, Wendy (Kendal) Larive of Kirkland, Washington; two cousins, Laura and Jayson Ruley of Oxford Junction; and special friends, Kathy Whiteside, Nicole Alcorn and his entire extended family at Children?s Hospital of Iowa.
Doug was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, John Ruley in 1987; and a brother-in-law, Cleaophis Robinson in 2005.
Doug was born September 22, 1998, the son of Dan and Ruth Ruley. He was a second grade student at Garfield Elementary, a member of Cub Scout Pack 42 and a member of St. Joseph?s Catholic Church. Doug was honored by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as the Boy of the Year in 2005.
A friend to animals, especially kitties, he enjoyed learning new things, excelled at video games and loved and enjoyed his family the most. Doug?s presence, humor and undying spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was an excellent role model in showing all he met how not to give up.
