Douglas L. Janda, 64, of 2870 Hunter?s Ridge Road, Marion, Iowa, died at home Sunday, January 14, 2007, following complications of a stroke. Memorial Service: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 20, 2007, at the First Lutheran Church, in Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Dr. Kay Slocum. Burial: Linwood Mausoleum, Cedar Rapids, at a later date..
Survivors include his wife, Diane; his mother, Bessie of Cedar Rapids; three daughters, Lisa Abben of Cedar Rapids, Kristi Homewood of Cedar Rapids and Mindy Carstensen of Anamosa; stepchildren, Jade Barta and Mindy Sorg both of Cedar Rapids; and one sister, Donna (Ron) Janda Moorman of Ames.
Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Kiara Luzum, Cassy Luzum, Ashley Luzum, Andria Homewood, Jacob Harnish, Jordon Harnish, John Carstensen, Owen Carstensen and Dane Carstensen; and a stepgrandchild, Emma Sorg.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ludwig Janda; a daughter, Jilane Harnish; a great-grandchild, Blaine Luzum; and grandparents, Frank and Anna Janda and Joseph and Francis Syrovy.
Doug was born December 5, 1942, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Ludwig and Bessie (Syrovy) Janda. He was a 1960 graduate of Jefferson High School where he earned many awards in track and swimming. Doug joined the US Navy in 1961 and was active on the USS Protector until his Honorable Discharge in 1963, transferring to the Naval Reserves. On August 27, 1978, he married Diane Newport in Hope Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. He was employed by United Airlines for 36 years until his retirement to Lady Lake, Florida in 2002. He resided there until January 2005 when he had a massive stroke and he and Diane moved to Marion, Iowa to be with family.
Doug was a member of Water Oaks Golf and Country Club in Lady Lake, Florida and Walden Golf and Country Club on Lake Houston in Houston, Texas. He also was a former member of the Eagles Club in Cedar Rapids.
Douglas and Diane enjoyed life to it?s fullest, dancing, playing golf, boating, jet skiing, and water and snow skiing.
His family and friends will miss him very much.
