Dorothy Louise (Hale) Van Note, 85, of 710 S. 12th St., Marion, died Monday, January 19, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following an extended illness. Services: 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 23, 2009, at the Marion Christian Church, Marion, by Rev. Dr. Robert Kunz. The family will greet friends from 4 - 7 p.m., Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Ronald Van Note of Marion; a son, Steve (Marcie) Van Note of Cedar Rapids; daughters, Cheryl Van Note of Bloomington, Minnesota and Connie Van Note of Eagan, Minnesota; grandchildren, Derrick and Taylor Sommerfeld, and Kiley Van Note; great-grandchild, Dillon Sommerfeld; a sister, Darlene (John) Pruett of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Milton (Jeanette) Hale of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, LaVerna Hensch and Gladys Sprague; and brothers, Walter, Richard, Grant and Bill Hale.
Dorothy was born July 18, 1923, the daughter of David E. and Elizabeth (Mefferd) Hale, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She graduated from Wilson High School in Cedar Rapids in 1943. Dorothy met Ronald at the roller skating rink in 1945 and they were married at Calvary Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids on June 6, 1947. She was a homemaker, loving wife, mother and grandmother who was devoted to her family and friends. Her encouragement and active participation in the family business were instrumental to the success of Van Note Construction Company. Dorothy was an active member of Marion Christian Church for 55 years, helping to form the church youth club and singing in the choir. She shared in her husband’s hobby of old cars and they held joint memberships in two Cedar Rapids organizations: Antique Automobile Club and Vintage Chevrolet Club.
Dorothy enjoyed gardening, flowers, music and spending time with family and friends. She will be remembered for her exceptional generosity and caring nature. She will be deeply missed.
