Dorothy Marie (Tow) Shaffer, 87, a resident of the Hiawatha Care Center, formerly of Lisbon and Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, April 10, 2005, at the center following an extended illness. Services: 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 14, 2005, at St. Ludmila?s Catholic Church by Father Tom McDermott. A rosary will be recited beginning at 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Friends may call from 4:30 - 7:00 p.m., with a vigil service beginning at 7:00. Entombment: Linwood Mausoleum, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include her daughters, Sandra Wolrab and husband Mike of Mt. Vernon and Diane Grimm of Marion; her grandchildren, Marc Wolrab and wife Sue of Mt. Vernon, Melissa Wolrab of Chicago, Melinda Wolrab of Chicago, Theresa Vogel and husband Michael of Marion and John Grimm and wife Jessica of Center Point; her great-grandchildren, Michele, Shaun and Brandon Wolrab, Jamie and Mason Vogel and Andrew Grimm; brother and sister-in-law, Floyd "Bud? Shaffer and wife Wanda; nieces, nephews and many wonderful friends including her dearest friends Hazel Adams Ressler of Iowa City; Patty Neuhaus Flaherty of California and her niece?s husband, Ron Meyers.

She was preceded in death by her husband Donald; her parents; two brothers, Louis and Edwin; and a sister-in-law, Blanche Tow.

Dorothy was born July 20, 1917, the daughter of Omer and Eva Margaret (Godden) Tow in Fairfax, Iowa. Dorothy attended and graduated from Grant High School in Cedar Rapids in 1935. On December 27, 1942, she was united in marriage to Donald A. Shaffer at the parsonage of St. Patrick?s Catholic Church in Fairfax. Before marriage, she worked at Woolworth?s and Craemer?s Department Stores in Cedar Rapids. As "Miss Craemer?s?, she was crowned "Miss Cedar Rapids? at the 1941 Ellis Swimming Pool dedication. Dorothy and her husband owned the "Dinner Den Café? from 1946-1951 in Lisbon and the A&W Restaurant in Lisbon and then later in Mt Vernon from 1955-1992. She was a charter member of the National Catholic Society of Forresters-Mother of Perpetual Help Ct. 769 and active for 67 years and a member of St. Ludmila?s Catholic Church. She was a former member of the St. John?s Baptist Catholic Church and the Altars and Rosary Society in Lisbon/Mt. Vernon. Dorothy enjoyed her family, friends, potlucks, Adventure Club, golfing, visiting the sick and traveling (especially to St. Petersburg Beach, Florida) or to wherever her husband wanted to go. She had resided at Silver Pines Residential Care in Cedar Rapids before moving to Hiawatha Care Center.

Dorothy will be remembered by her loving and caring personality, friendliness and her favorite line, "I am glad you got to see me.?
