After some final, wonderful time with her son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Dorothy Anna Schram made a peaceful passage into heaven on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids at the age of 97.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 2, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Manchester by Rev. Mike Druhl. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home in Manchester. Additional visitation will be held one hour before services, Sunday, at the church. Dorothy will be interred at the Oakland Cemetery in Manchester during a private family ceremony on Monday, February 3.

Dorothy was born March 13, 1916, in Rock Falls, IA, the youngest of Adolph and Carrie (Caroline) Gashel’s six children. She attended school in Rock Falls, Cedar Falls, and graduated from Vinton High School in 1933. Dorothy attended Pitze’s Beauty School in Waterloo and worked there for nine years. On September 15, 1946, Dorothy married Herbert Ezra Schram at her parents’ home in Waterloo. They then moved to Manchester, where their only child, Ronald Schram, was born in 1949. Dorothy assisted Herb with his construction business as a secretary/treasurer and bookkeeper for many years. In May of 1992, Herb’s business was sold, just weeks before his passing.

Her 97 years of life with us were, in a word, busy. She was an avid volunteer and servant of many as a member of the Manchester United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women’s Society, the Rebekah Lodge, the Royal Neighbor Society, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Hospital Auxiliary and Pythian Sisters, as well as belonging to two card clubs. She volunteered at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester, Camp Courageous, and the same Good Neighbor Home where she passed her final years. Dorothy filled her time at home crocheting, knitting, reading scripture, working crossword puzzles, and cooking unrivalled dinners and pies. She will be remembered for these services and her sense of humor (she called it “being goofy”), which she passed on to her son and her five granddaughters.

Dorothy is survived by her son Ron and his wife Carolyn of Ames; her five granddaughters, Kelley (Mike) Davenport of Oakes, ND, Carrie (Ben) Striegel of What Cheer, Jessie (Jeremy) Shipley of Bondurant, Molly (Douglas) Longman of DeSoto, and Taylor Schram of Ames; nine great-grandchildren, Maddie Schram, Brody, Avery, and Bailey Bartholomew, Jace Davenport, Ezra Striegel, Hallie and Tristan Shipley, and Eleanor Longman; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Dorothy joins her husband, Herbert Schram in heaven, as well as her parents, and her five siblings: Genevieve Armstrong, Thelma Menneke, Gladys Seaver, Harold Gashel, and Leonard Gashel.
