Dorothy Nelson, 91, of Marion, died peacefully Saturday, January 31st, 2015, at Unity Point Hospice Center. Funeral Service: 1:30 pm Thursday, February 5, 2015, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, conducted by Vicki Standley. The family will greet friends from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at the funeral home and 30 minutes prior to the service on Thursday. Graveside Service: 11:00 am Friday, February 6, 2015, at Otho Cemetery, rural Otho, Iowa.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; daughter Carol (Roger) Harms of Titonka; son, Kim (Deb) Nelson of Marion; and grandsons Cory (Erica) of Clear Lake and Preston of Nashua. Her two sisters Gladys Laird and Sula Jordison still reside in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jerry Laird and Roland Laird; and one sister, Mary Jane Reed.
Dorothy was born April 23, 1923 in Otho, Iowa, to Emerson and Mary Laird. She was united in marriage to William Nelson on July 6, 1947, in Otho. She was educated at Morningside College and Mount Mercy College. Her teaching career included schools in Otho, Ogden, Harcourt, St. Joseph’s (Marion), and Springville. She retired in 1986 after 32 years of instruction.
Dorothy was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marion and Wesleyan Circle. Previously she belonged to the National Education Association and the Springville Education Association.
