Dorothy J. Mensen, 82, of Earville died, Thursday, January 03, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center, Dyersville.
Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 am, Monday, January 7, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earlville. Visitation will be 1:00pm – 8:00pm, Sunday, January 6, 2013 at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Earlville, with an 8:00 pm Parish Scripture Service. Additional visitation will be 9:00am – 10:00am, Monday at the funeral home prior to Mass. Burial will be in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Earlville.
Dorothy was born June 2, 1930 in Dyersville, the daughter of Hugo and Regina (Deutmeyer) Funke. She attended school at Saints Peter & Paul School in Petersburg, and Xavier in Dyersville. On September 26, 1950, Dorothy was united in marriage to Leo Mensen at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville. The couple farmed near Earlville, retiring and moving to Earlville in 1990. Dorothy also worked at the Dyersville Country Junction. Dorothy and Leo were married 61 years, before Leo’s death in 2011.
Dorothy was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earlville, served on the St. Joseph’s Guild, Beckman Booster Club, and helped to establish a Concession at the Dyersville Commercial Club. She always made sure the kids had good clothes, and provided all of their children with a Catholic education. Dorothy enjoyed playing cards, loved to cook and be with her family.
Dorothy is survived by eleven children, Dan Mensen of Urbana, Loras (Suzanne) Mensen and Steve (Julie) Mensen both of Earlville, Gary (Nancy) Mensen of Dyersville, Deb Meis of Platteville, WI, Kevin (Kathy) Mensen and Tom (Jill) Mensen both of Dyersville, Mike (Peg) Mensen of Adel, Cindy (Dan) Willenborg of Dyersville, Carl (Lisa)Mensen of Luxemburg, and Donnie (Amy) Mensen of Carroll; twenty-eight grandchildren; eight-teen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; eight siblings, VernaLee Digman, Janice (LaVerne) Mensen, Rita (Lawrence) Lansing, Leon (Karen) Funke, Floyd (Janet ) Funke, Lois (Artie) Kern, Theresa (Charlie) Schindler, and Darlene (Wayne) Wegmann; and a sister-in-law, Charlotte Mensen.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; her parents, Hugo and Regina Funke; mother and father in-law; Frank and Hattie Mensen; a grand daughter, Tiffany Jo Mensen; a daughter in-law, Marcia Mensen; a sister, Mary Lou Funke; in-laws, Eddie Digman, Edmund (Irene) Mensen, Ambrose (Mary Ann) Mensen, Arnold Mensen; and a nephew, Larry Digman.
A memorial fund has been established in Dorothy’s name.
