Dorothy was born April 23, 1930, in Elkader, Iowa, the daughter of Emil and Christine (Meyer) Hoth. She grew up on the family farm, working on the farm with her father and in the kitchen with her mother. Dorothy left the family farm after school to move to Cedar Rapids. She was working at the phone company when she met Pat O’Malley, a young man from Waukon. They married in 1957. Dorothy spent several years during the 1970’s working at St. Pius X School as a lunch lady, and then she went to Regis High School. She retired in 1993.
Dorothy was a lifelong seamstress, she loved to sew, embroider, and do all sorts of sewing crafts. She was very creative and could do almost anything she set her mind to. Dorothy spent a lot of time creating beautiful quilts, pot holders, and baby blankets. She was a longtime member of Collins Craft Club, and Eastern Iowa Heirloom Quilters. As a member of the Quilt Club, materials were supplied to her, and she turned them into children’s blankets. Over the years, Dorothy donated many, many blankets to the Quilt Club to go to natural disasters, flood victims, and the police department. She must have made a thousand pot holders that were donated to charities, and given to family and friends. Giving these away gave Dorothy great joy.
Dorothy was a kind and generous person. She was a whirlwind of energy, out pacing those years younger than herself. She was a longtime volunteer at Northbrook Manor Care Center, donating many hours of time, spending it with residents. She took great joy in spending this time chatting with them. She donated countless quilted lap robes to Northbrook, and other care centers in the area.
Dorothy was a devoted wife to Pat for 55 years, and a loving mother and grandmother. Her commitment to her family lives on in her children and grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to Dorothy’s family in her memory.
