Dorothy Mae Leichsenring, 79, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, went peacefully to her Lord surrounded by family on Thursday, May 24, 2012, at Meth-Wick Community, Cedar Rapids. Services: 11 a.m. Monday 28, 2012 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, by Revs. Craig Peters and Lloyd Brockmeyer. Family will meet friends on Sunday, May, 27, 2012, from 3-7p.m. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her three children, Kay (David) Karsten of Solon, Beth (Gary) Kramer of Orange County, California, and Brad (Jennifer) Leichsenring of Shellsburg; a brother, Albert (Claryce) Hartke of Colesburg, six grandchildren, Emily (David) Sworobowicz, Lauren Kramer, Meredith Kramer, and Sarah, Hannah and Noah Leichsenring; one great-granddaughter Olivia Sworobowicz; and two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Hartke of Colesburg and Lorraine Todd of Louisville, Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene; grandson, Eric Karsten; two brothers, Richard and Donald Harke; and sister-in-law, Lila Nesetril.
Dorothy was born September 13, 1932, daughter of Fred and Mae Dorothy (Bernhard) Hartke in Monona, Iowa. She graduated from Monona High School in 1950, then received her teachers certificate at Iowa State Teachers College. Dorothy taught second grade in Cedar Falls for two years followed by two years of third grade in Marion. On December 26, 1954, she married Gene H. Leichsenring in Monona. Gene passed away in 1996.
After raising her family, she went back to work at Teleconnect, then worked at B.V.S Performance System, retiring as President/C.O.O. in 1997. After retirement, Dorothy became treasurer of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.
She loved playing bridge, stitching, scrap booking, gardening, cooking, and most of all spending time with her grandchildren. Dorothy was a member of a gourmet club and volunteered for many activities at St. Mark’s Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meth Wick, Camp Courageous or St Mark’s United Methodist Church.
