Dorothy Joan (Herring) Johnston, 77, of Toddville, died Saturday, March 6, 2010, in her home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Marion. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the celebration at the funeral home on Wednesday.

Survivors include her husband, Larry; children, Donald (Sarah) Stewart of Cedar Rapids, James (Christee) Stewart of Cedar Rapids, and Jennifer Stewart of Cedar Rapids; step-son, Eric (Lisa) Johnston of Marion; step-daughter, Kelly (fiancé, Chuck) McCool of Ames; father, Donald Herring of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Jessica Hosseini, Shelly Stewart, Nicole Stewart, Jay Stewart, Joe Stewart, Jon Stewart, Sara Smith, Ashley Schnoebelen, Lydia and Ethan Johnston, and Austin McCool; great-grandchildren, Blake and Allison Stewart, Kamran Hosseini, Shantel Stewart-Robinson, Alayna Schnoebelen, Rubee Stewart, Cyler Stewart, and Jonah and Elizabeth Smith; and brother, Bob (Marlys) Herring of Marion.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Bernice Herring; sister, Donna Blair; infant brother, Jimmie Herring; and brother, Jack Pope.

Dorothy was born March 5, 1933, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Donald and Bernice (Hill) Herring. She graduated from Franklin High School in 1951. Dorothy married Lawrence “Larry” Johnston on August 26, 1985, in Las Vegas. In 1986, Dorothy earned her Associate’s Degree in nursing from Kirkwood Community College. She worked as a Registered Nurse for Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids for many years, and was a member of VFW Auxiliary #788 of Cedar Rapids. Dorothy enjoyed games of all sorts, especially playing cards with friends. She loved parties and family gatherings. Dorothy always had a great sense of humor; she was upbeat and welcoming to all who knew her.

A memorial fund has been established in Dorothy’s memory.
