Dorothy B. Homann, 90, formerly of Waverly, Iowa, passed from an extended illness on April 8, 2008, at Crestview Acres in Marion. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, 520 Wilson Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, by Chaplain Christine Wagner-Hecht of Mercy Hospice. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial: Hala Cemetery, rural Swisher.
Five children from her marriage to William L. Jindrich, Sr survive Dorothy, Jan M. Rogers of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Mary Swenson of Shelburne, Vermont, Robert A. Jindrich of Iowa City, Iowa, D. Anne (Patrick) Jindrich of Orange Beach, Alabama, and David (Pam) J. Jindrich of Morrison, Illinois.
Also surviving are Dorothy’s seven grandchildren, Michael Rogers of Cedar Rapids, Melanie (John) Gibson of Sutliff, Melissa Rogers of Mechanicsville, Frederick (Barb) J. Jindrich of South English, Steven (Michelle) Jindrich of Prophetstown, Illinois, and Melanie and Megan Jindrich of Clinton; and three great-grandchildren, Heather, Joseph and Alex Jindrich of South English.
She was preceded in death by her eldest son, William (Patricia) L. Jindrich of Amana, Iowa; her parents; two brothers, Glenn and Robert Sommer; and one sister, Gladys Buzzard, all of Waterloo, Iowa.
Dorothy was born September 11, 1917, in Tripoli, Iowa, to Arthur C. Sommer and Rosa I. Schwem. She attended and graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1935 and received her nursing degree at age 42 from the University of Iowa. Upon graduation, Dorothy was employed at the University Hospital & Clinics in Iowa City.
Dorothy married Ronald E. Homann in June, 1975, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly, Iowa. In their retirement, they enjoyed traveling and many outdoor-related activities including gardening, bird watching, and fishing trips to Minnesota. After Ron’s passing on June 10, 1991, Dorothy volunteered much of her free time to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday School, assisting Prayer Groups and preparing weekly bulletins until her illness in 2002.
Memorials donations will be accepted for the American Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Dorothy.
