Dorothy Mae Collins, 74, of Marion, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, in her home surrounded by her devoted children. Memorial Mass: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2004, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, by the Rev. John Gossman. Graveside Committal Services: 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton, Iowa. Friends may call from 4 - 8 p.m. Friday (May 21) at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, where a parish vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.
Survivors include her children: Peter Collins and wife Chris of Rockwall, Texas, and their daughters, Elaine, Debbie and Betty; Mary McLain and husband Ron of Cedar Rapids and sons, Matthew J. Paul and Scott McLain and daughter Judy McLain; Thomas D. Collins of Des Moines; John Collins and wife Jeanne and their children, Courteney, Sarah, and Christian of Cherry Valley, Illinois; Pat Collins and wife Shelly and their children, Michael, Megan and Madison of Lexington, Kentucky; and Ann Humbert and husband Mike of Cedar Rapids and their daughters, Tressa and Kate.
Also surviving are two sisters, Jean Dougherty and husband Joe of Elkader and Jule Hermanson and husband Hubert of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Joe Gavin and wife Mary of Waukon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant daughter, Mary Louise; her parents; and a brother, William Gavin.
Dorothy was born October 31, 1929, the daughter of Francis and Helen (Steinhart) Gavin in Hanover Township, Dorchester, Iowa, where she was raised on the family farm. She was a graduate of St. Patrick High School in Waukon. On May 10, 1948, she was united in marriage to Thomas D. Collins Jr. in Hanover Township. He died December 12, 2001.The couple farmed in the Garrison and Marion areas and Dorothy was a Federal Meat Inspector for the USDA for many years, retiring in 1991.
Dorothy was a dedicated member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion and was an active member of NARFE. She volunteered at Winslow House Care Center as a patient advocate.
Dorothy was always a farm girl at heart, happiest when she was gardening and cooking for her family and friends.
The family wishes to extend their deepest thanks to the staff of St. Luke?s Hospital, St. Luke?s Hospice, Dr. James Boddicker and Father John Gossman for their kind care and assistance during Dorothy?s illness and at the time of her death.
A memorial fund has been established for St. Luke?s Hospice in Dorothy?s memory.
