Doris May Lewis, 92, of Marion, died Friday, November 9, 2007 at ManorCare Health Services, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, following a short illness. Celebration of Life Services: 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 12, 2007, at First United Methodist Church in Marion, Iowa, with Vicki Standley officiating. Family and friends may call from 3 ?" 5 on Sunday, November 11, 2007, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. Burial: Springville Cemetery, Springville, Iowa.
Survivors include three daughters; Dorothy Johnston of Highlands, Texas, Mary Watkins of Columbia, Missouri, and Ruth (John) Lundgren of Antioch, Illinois; 12 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 6 step great grandchildren, 9 great-great grandchildren and 6 step great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters-in law, Eleanor Clark of Anamosa, Iowa, and Mary Earlene Lewis of Marion, Iowa; one son-in-law, Ivan Graesser of Marion, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Bessie Graesser; a granddaughter, Lisa Hall; four sons-in-law, Roger Arnold, James Hall, Kenneth Johnston, and Barton Watkins; and three brothers, Donald, Floyd and Paul Clark.
Doris was born May 31, 1915, the daughter of Kyle and Ethel (Pearson) Clark in Springville, Iowa. She married Cecil A. Lewis on May 31, 1936 in Springville. He died on January 11, 1992. Cecil and Doris were longtime farmers in Jones and Linn Counties before retiring to Marion in 1966. Doris graduated from Upper Iowa College in 1962. She taught school at Excelsior Country School, near Marion, before she was married. After obtaining her Bachelor’s degree, she taught at Coggon, Marion and Mt. Vernon schools, retiring in 1972. Doris was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion. She was active in ADK (teacher’s sorority).
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church, Marion, or a charity of their choice.
