DORA ELLEN HOPPER
RETIRED PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHER
Dora Ellen Hopper, age 83, died on April 15, 2007. A longtime resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, Mrs. Hopper served as a school teacher most of her life. She had been residing in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the past eleven years.
Ellen Hopper was born in Wolfpit, Kentucky, on February 4, 1924, the daughter of a coal miner. She graduated from Asbury College and Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. During World War II, she assisted in the construction of the Air Force B-29 airplanes.
Her teaching career began as a missionary in Montevideo, Uruguay, in South America. Later she moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where she met Richard Hopper and married him on November 30, 1954. Ellen taught in the public schools in Fort Wayne. She later earned a Master?s Degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University. When her family moved to Indianapolis, she taught in Indianapolis Public Schools #35, #65 and #112. While at School #35, she was named "Teacher of the Year.?
Survivors include sons Gregory Hopper (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), and Michael Hopper (Fillmore, Minnesota); daughter, Nancy Hostetler (Brooklyn Center, Minnesota); stepson, Douglas Hopper (California); and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard C. Hopper on August 25, 1995.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Gideons International for the purchase of Bibles.
Private family services will be held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Arrangements are by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, Iowa.
