Dooley "John C. Whorton" Horton, 58, of 1320 B Ave., died Monday, December 5, 2005, at home, from long term damage of Agent Orange in Vietnam. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 9, 2005, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by Pastor Scott Owen of Blair Ridge Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids. Committal: 2:30 p.m. Friday at Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque at the Mueller Memorial Chapel.

Survivors include his parents, Donald and Betty Whorton; two sons, Brian Lynn Whorton of Cedar Rapids and Jonathan Boyd Harwood of Plano, Texas; a brother, Jerry L. Whorton of Aurora, Colorado; two grandchildren, Brinna Maree and Elijah Michael Whorton; and special friends, Joan and Bill Wright and C.P. Tomes.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Cleo and Grace Whorton and Louis and Ruth Heine.

Dooley was born August 23, 1947, the son of Donald Carlyle and Betty Ruth (Heine) Whorton in Dubuque. He served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He worked as a mechanical and electrical engineer at Los Alamos Labs and as a consultant at Nuclear Power Stations around the country. Dooley helped to develop the star wars defense program. He also taught Junior College in Santa Fe and was a certified hospice worker for AID?s patients.

Dooley attended Blair Ridge Baptist Church and was a member of American Legion Post No. 298 in Marion. He loved the Southwest and the desert.
