Donald H. Zimmerman, 94, of Hopkinton, died Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 19, 2009 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Delhi by Rev. John Kremer. Family will greet friends from 2:00 - 6:00 p.m., Sunday, January 18 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester where there will be a 2:00 p.m. Rosary Service and a 5:30 p.m. Scripture Service. Friends may call one hour before service Monday at the church. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery at Ryan.
Donald was born October 30, 1914 in Hazel Green Township, the son of Fred and Elsie (Aldrich) Zimmerman. After attending country school near his home, he helped his father in farming. Donald served four years with the U.S. Army during WWII in the Philippines. Moving back to the family farm, he was united in marriage to Helen Marie Huber, September 4, 1948 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ryan. The couple farmed their whole life in the Ryan area.
Donald was a member of the Ryan American Legion Post # 692. He dearly loved his family.
Donald is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen Zimmerman; three children, Larry (Kathy) Zimmerman of Ryan, Sharon Zimmerman of Marion and Teresa (Louie III) Fischer of Dubuque; six grandchildren, Ryan Zimmerman, Heather (Bill) Ries, Sean Zimmerman, Louie Fischer IV, Ben Fischer and Gretchen Fischer; two great-grandchildren, Parker and Alexa Ries; two sisters, Una Voelker and Norma Jean (Eddie) Lewis of Manchester; sisters and brother-in-law, Clara Bonin of Rochester, MN, Gerry Huber of Hopkinton, David (Jeanne) Huber of Independence and Dee Huber of Delhi.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Elsie Zimmerman; a daughter in infancy, Mary Elizabeth Zimmerman and infant twin sons; siblings, Fred (Lucille) Zimmerman, Carrol (Virginia) Zimmerman and Doris Zimmerman; a brother-in-law, Carroll Voelker; in-laws, Laura and Jack Mangold, Jay and Lorraine Huber, Tom Huber, Katie and Bill Mullan, Arthur Bonin, Pat Huber and Donald “Duck” Huber.
