Donald Leroy Whitson, 87, of Manchester, died Thursday, June 11, 2009, at Edgewood Convalescent Care, Edgewood. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at the Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Walker. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2009, at the funeral home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors by American Legion Honor Guard Post 727.
Survivors include two nieces, Emma Adams of Navoo, Illinois, and Beverly (Ed) McVay of Center Point; and a nephew, Dale Atwood of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Leona and Rhoda; two brothers, Harold and Guy; a sister, Jennie; and three nephews, Ray Atwood, Tom Atwood and Leonard Henderson.
Donald was born July 19, 1921, the son of Hiram and Edith (Cook) Whitson, in Spencer Grove, Iowa. He served with the Army Medical Corps during World War II and was in the National Guard for seven years. Donald lived in the Cedar Rapids for the past 40 years. He worked construction and was a painter at the Commonweath Apartments. Donald later owned a sporting goods business in Cedar Rapids. For the past 15 years, he traveled the Midwest selling gun parts.
