Donald J. “Whitey” Sellers, 84, of Manchester, Iowa, died Saturday, October 18, 2008, at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, following a brief illness.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am, Tuesday, October 21, 2008, at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester, Iowa. Visitation will be for one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Masonville.
Whitey was born on September 20, 1924, in What Cheer, Iowa, the son of Melvin H. & Letha [Harvey] Sellers. He attended school in Delta. On May 14, 1943, Whitey entered the U.S. Army during World War II serving in France, Germany, and was at Omaha Beach. He was discharged on January 12, 1946. Whitey was a construction worker in Dubuque and Glenwood. He also worked in the Cedar Rapids area as a chef. On January 27, 1984, Whitey was married to Joan M. Duggan in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Whitey was a former member of the American Legion Post and V.F.W. in Cedar Rapids. He loved going to his Army reunions. Whitey was a member of the Prosthetic Support Group at Mercy in Cedar Rapids. He was an avid Hawkeye Fan, and enjoyed golfing and fishing.
Whitey is survived by his wife, Joan Sellers of Manchester, his siblings, Jimmie [Susie] Sellers, Marvin Sellers, and Dorothy Pugh, all of Oskaloosa, Marvin , Chet [Melva] Sellers of Glenwood, Larry [Cathy] of Cedar Rapids, and Ann [Jim] Dale of Wever; his in-laws, Tom Duggan of Masonville, Barb & Chuck Rettinger of Masonville, Randy & LouAnn March of Stanley, and Sharon & Paul Netcott of Arizona; many nieces and nephews; and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Whitey was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin & Letha Sellers; brothers, Raymond and Robert Sellers; and sisters, Mildred Dannels and Viola Fowler.
