Donald L. Stanford, 93, of 1211 English Blvd., Marion, died Saturday, September 4, 2004, at Willow Gardens Care Center, Marion, after a short illness. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by the Rev. Mike Morgan. Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 - 7 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 7.)
Survivors include two sons, Stephen Stanford and wife Dana of Cedar Rapids and Thomas Stanford and wife Mary of Marion; five grandchildren, Melissa and Melanie Stanford, Mollie Pherson and husband Ben, and Abby and Scott Stanford; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Phoebe; a brother, Floyd; and two sisters, Leola and Ione.
Don was born on March 8, 1911, in Davis County, Iowa, the son of Fred and Frances Piper Stanford. On June 30, 1940, he was united in marriage to Phoebe E. Hyde at the Methodist church in Milton, Iowa. Phoebe died January 27, 2002. Don was a welder at LaPlant-Choate, Allis-Chalmers and then retired from Harnischfeger in 1973. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marion for sixty-four years and the Linn County Rose Society. Don was also an avid fisherman and gardener, tending over 100 rose bushes.
A memorial fund has been established for First United Methodist Church in Marion or Four Oaks Foundation, 5400 Kirkwood Blvd. SW, Cedar Rapids 52404 in memory of Don.
