Donald C. Spaight, 84, of Keystone Place, 6126 Rockwell Drive N.E., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Sunday, April 12, 2009, at Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 16, 2009, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Phil Thompson. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where a scripture wake will be held at 7 p.m. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the VFW.
Survivors include his children, Anne Brass of Anoka, Minnesota, Laurie Hughes of Cedar Rapids, Rob Spaight of Bettendorf and Jerry Spaight of Fairfax; ten grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bette; four brothers, Joseph, James, Paul and Monsignor Robert Spaight; and one sister, Mary K. Penningroth.
Born April 10, 1925, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Donald was the son of Leonard and Laurel (Hollingsworth) Spaight. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. On August 31, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Anne “Bette” Newcomb. He attended the University of Notre Dame and Kansas City School of Watchmaking. He owned and operated Spaight’s Jewelry.
Donald was a member of the VFW, the American Legion and the Elk’s Club.
