Donald Sands, 76, formerly of Manchester, died July 9, 2013 in Leesville, Louisiana.

Visitation will be 11:00 am – 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Manchester with 2:30 p.m. Graveside Services at Oakland Cemetery.

Donald was born on March 4, 1937, in Manchester, Iowa the son of Frank and Isabel Sands. He attended a country school form the first grade through the fifth grade, finishing the twelfth grade at Greeley H. S., Greeley, IA. In May of 1955 he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force for four years. He was baptized in May 1956 at First Baptist Church in Covington, LA. On May 25, 1956, he was united in marriage to Betty June Ray in Covington, IA. Don worked in electronics most of his life, first in the Air Force, then General Electric, Collins Radio, Cleco Electric then Civil Service (Fort Polk) where he retired January 1999 with 37 years of service to his country. Don and Betty had two boys from their marriage, Franklin K. and Barry E. Sands. Betty died in 1993 and later Don married Charlette. Don has been a member of the Leesville Masonic Lodge 240 for over 30 years, and was very active with the Boy Scouts (Troop 75) for many years, it was one of his loves, and Don became committee chairman for the troop. He is a member of E.L.B.C. and a Deacon.

Survivors include his wife of 19 years, Charlette; son Barry E. Sands and wife Margaret of West New Bury, MA and their children, Shannon E. Sands, Ian K. Sands and Aiden Sands and grandsons, Franklin K. Sands, Jr., and Curtis A. Sands and two step-children, Jason P. Harmon and Trudy J. Harmon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Betty, one son Franklin K. Sands, Sr.; two sisters, Donna Sands Lee and Lorrain Sands Huber and five brothers, Vincent C, Lloyd Paul, Louis Theodore, Richard Francis and Larry Dean.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
