Donald F. Ries, 80, of Greeley, died Saturday morning, May 7, 2005 at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester following a short illness.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 10, 2005 at St. Joseph?s Catholic Church in Greeley with Rev. Msgr. Ralph Simington presiding. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Manchester and for one hour before Mass Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph?s Catholic Cemetery, Greeley.

Donald was born on September 17, 1924 the son of Thomas and Katherine (Konzen) Ries in New Vienna. He attended country school at St. Boniface in New Vienna. Donald helped on the family farm and worked as a hired hand. On October 22, 1947 Donald was united in marriage to Esther I. Steffen at St. Joseph?s Catholic Church in Greeley. The couple settled and farmed near Greeley.

Donald was a member of St. Joseph?s Catholic Church in Greeley. He served on the Maquoketa Valley School Board and belonged to the Delaware County Cattlemen?s Association and Pork Producers. Farming was Donald?s life. He enjoyed spending time with his family and will be remembered as a kind and gentle man. Donald was a mentor of many.

Donald is survived by his wife, Esther I. Ries of Greeley; five children, Lynn (Ray) Miranda of Manchester, Steve (Deb) Ries of Earlville, Clyde (Barb) Ries of Delaware, Rose Hanson of Cedar Rapids, and Mark (Laura) Ries of Toddville; sixteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Mabel Kronlage of Monticello; and a brother, Matt (Julia) Ries of Manchester.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas & Katherine Ries; one sister, Nettie Pitz; and two brothers, Elmer & Joe Ries.
