Donald B. Phillips, 88, of Urbana, died Thursday, February 10, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a long illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 14, 2005, at the Urbana Christian Church, Urbana, by the Rev. Tom Felts, with military rites. Family will greet friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, February 13, 2005, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point. Burial: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 15, 2005, at Cox Cemetery, Urbana.

Survivors include his children, Peggy (Dan) Poole of Charlotte, North Carolina, Rosemary Primus, Melvin Phillips, both of Urbana, Barbara (Gary) Rick of Marion, Mark Phillips and Evalina (Arlyn) Sieck, both of Center Point; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his dog, Chico.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie; a son, Bill; four sisters, Nona Van Fossen, Edna Hawkins, Hazel Stimson and Blanche Kingsley; a brother, Paul Phillips; and a son-in-law, Don R. Munsell.

Donald was born August 17, 1916, the son of John and Effie Todd Phillips, in Troy Mills, Iowa. He served during World War II with the United States Marines on Tulagi, Guadal Canal, Tarawa, Saipan and Tinian. Don served overseas from July 1, 1942 to September 30, 1944 in the Asiatic Pacific, Solomon Islands, New Zealand, Gilbert Islands, Hawaiian Islands and the Marianas. On November 22, 1946, he was united in marriage to Bessie Van Fossen in Center Point, Iowa. She died May 20, 2001. Don farmed and then steam cleaned and painted heavy equipment for James W. Bell.

A memorial fund has been established in memory of Don.
