Donald E. Moershel

Donald E. Moershel, 86, of 4229 Mt. Vernon Rd. SE, Cedar Rapids, died Monday, December 31, 2007, at West Ridge Care Center, following a short illness. Services: 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with military honors. Rev. Del Bear will officiate. The family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. until service time on Wednesday. Burial: Campbell Cemetery, Bertram.
Survivors include his daughter-in-law, Susan Moershel of Cedar Rapids; his granddaughter, Holly Moershel of Cedar Rapids; his sister, Mary Jane (Marlowe) Burgy of Eagle River, Wisconsin; and special friend, Ruth Peterson of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his son, Douglas; and brother, Ferdinand.
Donald was born April 22, 1921, the son of Herbert and Louise (Bopp) Moershel, in Moline, Illinois. An Amana High School graduate, he served his country in the United States Army during World War II. On March 18, 1961, he was united in marriage to Marlys Edenson, in Moline. Donald worked for the Rock Island Railroad as a brakeman. He also owned the Moershel Shoe Repair in Cedar Rapids and Maquoketa.
Donald loved to go to dances, antiques, small engine repair and coin collecting. He was a member of the El Kahir Shrine.
