Donald E. High, 83 of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, August 29, 2011, in his daughter’s home. Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 1, 2011, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2011, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his children, Kimberly “Kymm” (Patrick) Loeffler of Cedar Rapids, Steve High of Cedar Rapids and Todd (Karla) High of Marion; five grandchildren, Brianne (David) Kluth, Alyssa and Jordan Loeffler, and Brittnee and Noah High; two great-grandchildren, Payton and Presley Kluth; three brothers, Paul of Joplin, Missouri, Glen (Wilma) of Cedar Rapids and Ralph of St. Paul, Minnesota; and two sisters, his twin, Dorothy (Bill) Lane of Robins and Ruth Shannon of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 45 years, Genevieve; and sister, Irene Drafhal.
Don was born January 26, 1928, the son of Earl and Viola (Bottenfield) High, in Palo, Iowa. A graduate of Roosevelt High School, he entered the Army Air Corp in 1946. Don served the United States in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, Cuban Missile Crisis and Vietnam War. He served on Air Force One with President Kennedy and President Johnson during their administration. On May 7, 1960, Don was united in marriage to Genevieve Grant in Edgewood, Iowa. On August 1, 1968, Don retired as a Master Sergeant after 22 years in the United States Air Force and then worked at the Pentagon as joint chief of staff until July 22, 1976. He moved back to Cedar Rapids and worked at Bulter Paper, retiring from there after 20 years of service.
Don was a member of Edgewood Fellowship Center, Caleb Club at Good News Baptist Church and attended and volunteered at Mission of Hope. A resident of Brookview Independent Living, he enjoyed gardening, photography and especially loved playing board games with his grandchildren and friends.
Memorials may be directed to a fund to be established in Don’s honor.
