Donald Hendryx, 89, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Friday, September 6, 2103, at Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Services: 11 a.m. Monday, September 9, 2013, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point, conducted by Rev Mark Leckband. Family will greet friends from 10 until service time on Monday. Burial: 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 10, at Alice Cemetery, with military rites.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Hilda (Lyman) Hendryx of Cedar Rapids; sisters, Geraldine Healy of Vinton and Margaret Kaut of Hiawatha; children, Russell Hendryx of Cedar Rapids, Kathleen Peterka of Little Falls, Minnesota, Milton Hendryx, Merle Welte, both of Garrison, Iowa, and Charles Hendryx of Walls, Mississippi; thirteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; three step granddaughters, and seven step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Leslie Dean Hendryx and infant; two granddaughters, Donna April Peterka and Emily Elizabeth Hendryx; and two brothers, Lloyd “Mike” Hendryx and Gerald Hendryx.
Donald was born on July 12, 1924, in rural Red Oak, son of Lloyd “Sharky” and Inez (Pickering) Hendryx. Donald graduated from Center Point High School. He served in the United States Army in Des Moines at New Wac Base, then at General McArthur Headquarters in Tokyo. Donald was a 65 ½ year American Legion member in Walker and Center Point. He farmed in rural Alburnett, also worked at Hendryx Brothers and Cargill Corn. He was also a member and founder of Carpmaster. Donald enjoyed bowling, playing cards, getting people together and was known for making up to 50 gallons of stew at a time.
