Donald J. Haines, 94, formerly of Marion, passed away Monday, January 31, 2011, at St. Lukes Living Center West, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Services: 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 5, 2011, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, Iowa, by Rev. Troy Titus, with military honors by American Legion Post #298 of Marion. Visitation: 9:30 – 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 5, 2011, at the funeral home. Private Family Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion, Iowa.

Don is survived by his wife of 69 years, Josephine of Cedar Rapids; one son, Dennis Ray (Elizabeth) Haines of Marion; one granddaughter, Karen Haines (Roger) Bolsinger of Guttenberg; two great-grandchildren, Aaron Quinby and Kayla Bolsinger; and a sister, Bernita Weaver.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers, Howard, Richard, Kenneth, and Robert; 1 sister, Margaret; and an infant granddaughter, Ann Marie Haines.

Don was born November 7, 1916, the son of Fred and Hattie (Carver) Haines, in Coggon, Iowa. He graduated from Marion H.S. in 1936. On February 2, 1942, he was united in marriage with Josephine E. Jones at her parents’ home on Blairs Ferry Road. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. After discharge in 1945, he became the auto insurance underwriter for Mutual Fire and Auto Insurance Company in Cedar Rapids for 30 years. In retirement, Don and Jo enjoyed traveling with their Holiday Rambler RV throughout the US and wintering in Arizona.
