Donald E. Guehrn, 63, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, January 13, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids from a heart attack. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 20, 2012, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids by Father Philip Thompson. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, January 19, 2012, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion where a parish vigil service will begin at 4:00 p.m. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the mass at the church. Graveside Service: 2:30 p.m. Friday, January 20, 2012, at Genoa Bluff Cemetery, rural Ladora.

Survivors include his wife, Donna of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Kristy (Brandon) Powers; two step-daughters, Lora Bryan and Karen Mull; a brother, Gary (Linda) Guehrn; two sisters, Linda (Jerrell) Barnes and Sally (Chuck) Heppner; two grandchildren, Bradley and Brooke Mull; and his grand-pup, “Scrappy”.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Roger.

Donald was born August 10, 1948, the son of Mervin and Evelyn (Keil) Guehrn in Marengo. While growing up in Marengo, he served on the Marengo City Council. He graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College, Mt. Pleasant, IA, in 1970 with degrees in both teaching and history. He went on to earn degrees as a Paralegal and in accounting. Donald spent most of his adult life in Cedar Rapids, in the insurance and telecommunications industry. On August 14, 1999, he married Donna Mardorf in Anamosa. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.

Donald was the family genealogist and spent his free time collecting and updating information on family members past and present. He loved history and greatly enjoyed teaching at Kirkwood Community College’s Community Education Program in Cedar Rapids. Donald was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His daughter Kristy was his shining light. He loved his grandkids and especially enjoyed helping them with their homework. Donald was always there for everyone and had a great sense of humor. He was the family jokester. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
