Donald A. Freel, 71, of Muscatine, formerly of Robins, died Wednesday May 13, 2015, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 18, 2015, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Celebration of Life: 2:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home by Pastor Craig Peters. Private Family Inurnment: Dunkard Cemetery, rural Toddville.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Glenda Freel; daughter, Jennifer Nicewanner of Cedar Rapids; son, Mark (Lisa) Freel of Shueyville; grandsons, Jack T. and Nicholas T. Freel, Austin A., Brady A., and Colby A. Nicewanner; sister, Rebecca Nelson of Cedar Rapids; and many close friends from Muscatine and the Cedar Rapids areas.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; and his parents-in-law, Glenn and Reta White.
Don was born November 5, 1943, in Iowa City, the son of Donald L. and Martha A. (Grant) Freel. He graduated from Alburnett High School in 1961, and later graduated from Coe College receiving his BS in Biology. Don married Glenda White on August 10, 1963, in Marion. He worked as the Director of Water Pollution Control for the City of Muscatine for 36 years until his retirement in January 2008. Don was a member of the Lone Tree Flyers and the Iowa City Aerohawks. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who took great pride in providing for his family. Don was a life-long environmentalist interested in the protection and preservation of our world. He had a love for RC airplanes and NASCAR, and had a passion for the outdoors (especially hunting and fishing). Don enjoyed tinkering and fixing anything and everything.
