Donald “Donnie” H. Meier, 81, of 1006 Brockman Dr. SE, Cedar Rapids, died Monday, August 25, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center, following a sudden illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 29, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Deacon LaVerne Flagel of All Saints Catholic Church. The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 28, 2008, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors.
Survivors include his wife, Carlene; a son, Paul of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Lloyd (Adeline) Meier of Clermont; a sister, Carla (Clark) Bolsinger of Guttenberg; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and four sisters, Laura in infancy, Sister Carol Meier, Paulette Groth and Lucille Henkel.
Donnie was born December 27, 1926, the son of Paul and Hattie (Heck) Meier in Guttenberg, Iowa. A 1944 graduate from St. Mary’s High School in Guttenberg, he served his country with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. From 1945 to 1956, Donnie worked on tow boats. On June 4, 1960, he was united in marriage to Carlene Davis in Guttenberg. For 32 years, Donnie worked at Quaker Oats, retiring as Senior Production Supervisor in RTE cereals in 1989.
Donnie loved the river and enjoyed fishing. He was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church and a 54-year member of the American Legion in Guttenberg.
