Donald J. “D.J.” Leonard, 62, of 3215 12th Avenue S.E., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, joined his heavenly father on May 21, 2009, after a short illness. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 27, 2009, by All Saints Catholic Church at St. Ludmila Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father David O’Connor. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with a vigil service at 4 p.m. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, with military honors.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia; children, Kelly Leonard of Cedar Rapids, Kathleen Leonard of Hiawatha, Brian Leonard of Chicago and Gabriella Leonard of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Michaela, Dominic and Vincent; and a special nephew, Christopher Zimbalatti.
D.J. was preceded in death by his parents.
Born January 9, 1947, in New York City, New York, D.J. was the son of Warren and Alice (Sarback) Leonard. He graduated from Minot State University in North Dakota and served in the U.S. Army. On June 7, 1969, he was united in marriage to Patricia Kelly in New York City. D.J. was a teacher and worked for St. Luke’s Hospital and New Horizons Leaning Center.
D.J. was an organ donor, a member of All Saints Catholic Church, the American Academy of Coders, the Radiological Technology Society and served on the board of Safe Coalition. D.J. was a season ticket holder to the Kernels and Rough Riders and volunteered for the Rough Riders. He liked his music and singing, but his greatest love was to be surrounded by his family. D.J. was always helpful and whenever you needed he’d be there. He was a loving husband and father and will be greatly missed.
