Donald O. Burns, 85, of Manchester, Iowa, died Tuesday morning, November 12, 2002, at the Regional Medical Center, Manchester, after a brief illness.
Services will be held at 2:30 pm on Thursday, November 14, 2002 at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Manchester, Iowa, with Rev. David H. Wagner officiating. Family will greet friends from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm Wednesday and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Manchester, Iowa.
Donald was born on October 19, 1917 in Coffins Grove Township, rural Manchester, Iowa the son of Otto & Lula Mae (Griffin) Burns. He attended school in Prairie Township then helped on the family farm. On January 24, 1945, Donald was united in marriage to Erna M. Curtis in Princeton, Missouri. The couple settled on the family farm.
Donald was a member of the Manchester United Methodist Church. He enjoyed woodworking, especially making things for his family. He also enjoyed league bowling, golfing, and playing cards and was an avid fan of stock car racing. The couple enjoyed raising strawberries and raspberries and sharing them with family and friends.
Donald is survived by his children and their spouses, Donald D. & Agnes Burns of Davenport, Kenneth & Janet Burns of Manchester, and Jerry & Patricia Burns of Manchester; nine grandchildren, David Burns, Greg Burns, Robert Burns, Cindy Funke, Sherri Olsen, Scott Burns, James Burns, Jennifer Burns and Jane Burns; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Cooper, and her husband Sam, of Nashville Tennessee, Mae Diercksen of Manchester; and one brother and his wife, Marwan "Mike? & Lillian Burns of Manchester.
Donald was preceded in death by his wife, Erna M. Burns, on October 29, 1999, his parents, Otto & Lula Mae (Griffin) Burns; and three brothers, Vernon, Howard and Merle Burns.
Donald was a wonderful father and grandfather and will be missed by all.
