Donald "Atzie? R. Atz, 62, of Alburnett, died Friday, January 5, 2007, in his home surrounded by his family following a courageous 2-year battle with cancer. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 8, 2007, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion, by Rev. Jack Kendall and Rev. Dan Peterson. The family will greet friends from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. Sunday, January 7, 2007, at the funeral home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors.

Survivors include his mother, Mildred of Alburnett; two sisters, Jerris (Ron) Richardson of Missouri Valley, Iowa, and Jalaa (Arlie) Weaver of Alburnett.

Also surviving are a half brother, James Atz; three nephews, Col. James Richardson, Jon Richardson and Josh Conway; two nieces, Jenice Richardson and Holly Duhaime; many other loving family members; and special friends, Jim Hill and Chuck and Mary Ann Williams.

Donnie was preceded in death by his father, Raymond; a brother, Dick; and a half sister, Dorothy.

Donnie was born April 25, 1944, the son of Raymond and Mildred (Layher) Atz in Cedar Rapids. Donnie graduated from Alburnett Community Schools in 1962. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. Donnie, better known as "Saturday Night Special,? was a truck driver for Farly Trucking, Farm Service and Graham & Son Trucking in Alburnett for 40-plus years. He was a member of Marion American Legion Post No. 298.

Military honors will be provided by Central City Amvets Post No. 37 and Central City American Legion Wapsi Post No. 421.

A memorial fund has been established in memory of Donnie.
