Don C. Knock, 69, of 6712 Waterview Dr. SW, Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, following a long illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 14, 2008, at the First Assembly of God Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Rick Gail. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, November 13, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Judy; his children, Kimberly (Michael) Bentley of Cedar Rapids, Julie (Bryan) Jones of San Diego, California, and Dennis (Molly) Knock of Atkins; seven grandchildren, Jillian Perry, Jamie Perry, Alicia Jones, Aaron Jones, Garrett Knock, Chase Knock and Mitchell Knock; and a brother, LaVerne (Sharylin) Knock of Terre Haute, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Don was born January 27, 1939, the son of Clarence and Opal (Joseph) Knock, in Williamsburg, Iowa. He served with the United States Navy Reserves. On September 4, 1959, Don was united in marriage to Judy Crooks in Cedar Rapids. For 21 years, he worked for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, retiring as Captain in 1986.
Don was a member of the Cedar Rapids Fire Department Safety Committee, Cedar Rapids Electrical Board of Appeal, Hawkeye Speed Skating Club and a member of the First Assembly of God Church, where he served as a deacon and an usher for many years. He also served as Secretary/Treasurer for the State Fire Marshall Association and as Captain in the Cedar Rapids Fire Department Prevention Bureau.
Don enjoyed fishing, auto racing and spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to the family in memory of Don.
The family would like to thank Dr. Bell, Dr. Pavandi, Dr. Wilbur, and St. Luke’s Hospice Center Staff, especially nurses, Michelle and Mary for their loving support and care given to Don.
