Don V. Fairchild, 97, of 2440 22nd Ave., Marion, died Monday morning, February 21, 2005, at Silver Pines Assisted Living in Cedar Rapids. Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, February 24, 2005, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by the Rev. Del Bear. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 - 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23. Graveside services: 1 p.m. Friday, February 25, 2005, at Westview Cemetery, Kirkville, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred; three sons, Gerald (Betty) Fairchild of Marion, Dale (Murial) Fairchild of Phoenix, Arizona, and Ray (Diana) Fairchild of Shellsburg; six daughters, Mary Nelson (Sam) of Bonaparte, Janice Courtney (Don) of Ottumwa, Joanne Stivers (Jim) of Ottumwa, Betty Jean Rogers (Dave) of Robins, Janie Fairchild of Marion and Nancy Mahanger of Pickering, Ontario, Canada; a brother, Frank (Myrta) Fairchild of Eddyville; three sisters, Alice Smith of Fremont, Phyllis VanWinkle of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Roberta Petra (Leonard) of Cedar Falls; twenty-three grandchildren; thirty-one great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Glenn; a brother, James; five sisters, Doris, Lucille, Marjorie, Gladys and Bernice; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Don was born in Wapello County, Iowa, the son of Carl and Belle (Abernathy) Fairchild on November 24, 1907. On October 29, 1936, he was united in marriage to Mildred Dawson in Ottumwa. He was a coal miner and farmer before moving to Marion in 1963. Don worked at Collins Radio until his retirement.
