Derrald "Jack? Bailey, 94, of 378 27th Avenue S.W., died Thursday morning, April 21, 2005, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 23, 2005, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Thomas McDermott. Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion, with military honors. Survivors include four sons, John (Kathy) of Marion, James (Jeanann) of Cedar Rapids, Roger (Diane) of Fort Madison, and Arlow (Sondra) of St. Augustine, Florida; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a close personal friend of many years, Nancy Keller.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Simona; and a granddaughter, Sonya.
He was born March 7, 1911, in Los Angeles, California, the son of Charles and Katherine Hughes Bailey. Jack grew up in Vallejo, California, where he graduated from high school in 1930. He attended college at San Jose State, where he studied music. When the Depression hit, Jack left college and started an apprenticeship as a furniture maker. On December 8, 1941, he enlisted in the U.S Navy and served in the Pacific Campaign. He married Simona Goldie Beiser in 1943 at Oakland, California. After the war, Jack brought his family to western Iowa, and worked as a furniture builder in his own shops. Later, he moved to Donnellson, Iowa and worked as an instructor at the Fort Madison Penitentiary. Retirement found Jack in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was a member of St. Ludmila Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. His family and friends will greatly miss him and his wonderful story telling.
A memorial fund has been established. Military honors by American Legion Hanford Post No. 5.
