Dennis "Denny" Smola

Dennis (Denny) Carroll Smola, 66, of Dyersville, formerly of Central City, passed away Saturday, June 16, 2018, after a five month battle with cancer. Visitation: Noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City. Funeral Services: 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, at the funeral home, officiated by Reverend Dianne Grace. Burial: Mt. Clark Cemetery, Central City.
Denny was born September 27, 1951, in Anamosa, Iowa, the son of Carroll and Maurine (Kirkpatrick) Smola. He graduated from Central City High School in 1969. Denny attended Iowa State University in 1970. He was enrolled in the engineering program. Denny married Carol Miller on December 18, 1971, she passed away in 2002. He worked construction work each summer while he was in high school and was hired at Quaker Oats in January, 1972. Denny held many positions there including shipping supervisor, packaging supervisor, maintenance supervisor, and lastly process improvement engineer. He retired from Quaker Oats in 2004. Denny married Jaynne (Stielow) Weldin on May 17, 2003, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They moved from Vinton to Dyersville in 2004. He worked at Nu World Amaranth from September, 2011 to September, 2016. Denny enjoyed golfing, fishing, woodworking, and going to the casino. He was so proud of his ‘hole in one’ at Timberline Golf Course. During his high school years, he played football, was active in track and 4-H. Denny was the most giving and caring person with the biggest and most generous heart.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Jaynne Smola of Dyersville; step-children, Aaron (Julie) Weldin of Dubuque, Jamie (Jamie) Weldin of Peosta, and Kristin Weldin of Dubuque; step-grandchildren, Emma Weldin, Dayton and Lilly Weldin, Sophia, Elliot and Ian Loso; brother, Steve (Louise) Smola of Central City; uncle, Jim (Dell) Kirkpatrick of Arizona; niece, Jackie Smola of Shawnee, Kansas; nephew, Stan Smola of Marengo; great-nieces, Katie and Liz Ortgies; and several cousins.
Denny was preceded in death by his parents; previous wife, Carol Smola; and several aunts and uncles.
