Delbert DeGroff Usher, 92, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, October 13, 2014, at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny. Graveside Service: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 18, 2014, at Spring Grove Cemetery, Covington, Iowa. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.
Survivors include his daughter, Debra (Robert) Hansell of Ankeny; grandchildren, Leslie (Kyle) Austen of Iowa City and Thomas (Maggie) Hansell of Ankeny; four great- grandchildren, McKenna, Sophia, Josephine, and Claire; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Marie; his twin sister, Donna (Ed) Mittan; siblings, Pearl Usher, Alice (Arthur) Swinton, Imogene (Verle) Kruse, Harold (Eleanor) Usher, and Paul Usher.
Delbert was born May 6, 1922, the son of Otto and Sylvia (DeGroff) Usher in Chickasaw County. On August 23, 1941, he married Alta Marie Kessler. She died January 4, 1990. Delbert served with the U.S. Army during WWII in North Africa and Burma. He worked at Universal Engineering in Cedar Rapids and Bowe Machine Company in Bettendorf before retiring.
Delbert was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, boating, family, dogs, and card games.
