DeElda Kay "Dee? Zumbrunnen, 61, of 6640 Mt. Vernon Road S.E., died Thursday, January 22, 2004, in the Hiawatha Care Center, following a long illness. Services: 12:30 p.m. Monday, January 26, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion, by the Revs. David Hay and Christine Wagner-Hecht, Hospice of Mercy Chaplain. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial: Campbell Cemetery, Bertram.
Survivors include her husband James; a daughter, DeAnn Steinke of Cedar Rapids; four brothers, Bernard Venenga, Darrell Venenga and wife Nancy, Elton Venenga, and Keith Venenga and wife Elaine, all of Grundy Center; four sisters, LeAnn Bettenga and husband Paul of Holland, Doris Roberts of Dike, Marcia Stumpf of Cedar Falls; and Rebecca Jacobs and husband Eric of Cedar Rapids.
Also surviving are two grandchildren, Nicole and Amanda; and a brother-in-law, Wendell Holmes of Denver, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Carol Holmes, two brothers-in-law, George Roberts and Terry Stumpf and a sister-in-law, Margaret Venenga.
Dee was born the daughter of Ben and Grace Lupkes Venenga on September 30, 1942, in Holland, Iowa. She graduated from Grundy Center High School in1960 and attended Young?s Cosmetology School in Waterloo. On October 28, 1967, at Grundy Center, she was united in marriage to James B. Zumbrunnen. Dee began her beauty career at Mabeline?s in Cedar Rapids before spending many years at the Chateau Salon. She then tried her hand at running her own business, "Dee?s Style Salon? at which she was very successful, until health problems forced her to close. She was a member of the Small Business Association and a past member of the Lake McBride Country Club.
Dee was very talented in her profession and took a personal interest in the lives of her clientele, even to the last grandchild. She could remember birthdays, illnesses, sports, etc. She enjoyed annual trips to the Caribbean, taking a mid-winter break, and her Monday morning golf outings. Whenever asked how she played, she would reply, "I always win, ?cause I always have the highest score.?
Dee had a very deep love for her husband, daughter and grandkids and the rest of her family. She loved to attend family functions, especially Christmas, and has a closet full of photo albums.
Dee will be dearly missed by all whose lives she touched.
