Dearld Dennis “Denny” O’Brien, 61, of 1511 5th Ave. S.E., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Sunday, December 2, 2007 at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa, following a short illness. Services: 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 6, 2007, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m., Wednesday, December 5, 2007, at the funeral home.
Survivors include his wife, Dawn; two daughters, Shelley Peterson (Bob) of Cedar Rapids, and Dana (Brad) Butschi of Robins; 4 step-daughters, Ashley (Nick Trask), Amber (Chris Brown), Cara, and Brittany Poorman, all of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren ; a brother, Mike (Cindy) O’Brien, of Cedar Rapids; sisters, Juanita Benishek of Cedar Rapids; Linda Shaffer of North Liberty; and several nieces and nephews; The boys, Slats, Ron, and Bubba; a godson, Casey O’Brien; his mother-in-law, LaVae & Ed Light and Dave Aucutt; and a sister-in-law, Deb Wells, all of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a nephew, Dearld Ortberg, of California; and a brother-in-law, William Benishek.
Dennis was born September 6, 1946, the son of Dearld and Vivian (Vessey) O’Brien. Denny served in the Marine Reserves from 1965- 1969. He worked for the Cedar Rapids School District for many years until his retirement in 2004. He also was a longtime member of the Carpenter’s Local 308. He was a past Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus. Denny enjoyed ice fishing, gambling, trap shooting, St. Patrick’s Day, and spending time with family and friends.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the MICU unit at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for the wonderful care that was given to Denny.
A memorial fund has been established in Denny’s name, in care of Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 520 Wilson Ave., S.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 52402.
