Dean David Scheer, 69, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Friday, May 31, 2024. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, with a visitation one hour prior. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids is assisting the family.

Dean was born June 26, 1954, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Edwin and Vivian (Lewis) Scheer. He was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Marion, Iowa in 1954; and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Mount Vernon, Iowa in 1969. Dean grew up with his family on a farm north of Lisbon, Iowa. He was blessed by special education support and care at Lisbon Community School, graduated from Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids, and pursued vocational training at the Martin Luther Home in Beatrice, Nebraska. Dean was united in marriage to Wendy Sue Krebs on November 6, 1982, in Cedar Rapids.

Dean enjoyed building model houses and other structures (e.g., replicas of the bridges of Madison County, and The Little Brown Church in Nashua) in his woodworking shop in the basement of his home. He designed and created these pieces using his imagination and memories of places that he visited. Craig Campbell became a very close friend and “brother” to Dean along with others at Theatre Cedar Rapids. It was there that Dean volunteered and developed more woodworking skills with power tools, along with building and painting sets. Dean was recognized by Theatre Cedar Rapids as Volunteer Extraordinaire for rebuilding the prop room in 1992. Dean and Wendy received an Achievement Award in 2013 from Goodwill of the Heartland.

Dean worked as a kitchen service worker at a number of businesses as well as at Goodwill of the Heartland. He attended Day Habilitation activities for many years at Goodwill and To The Rescue. During that time, Dean developed friendships and enjoyed van trips to the greater Cedar Rapids area.

Survivors include his siblings, Harold (Eunice) Scheer of Hills, Iowa, John (Sue) Scheer of Ashland, Missouri, Mark (RuthAnn) Scheer of Lisbon, Iowa; sister-in-law, Jackie Wilhelm of Cedar Rapids; brothers-in-law, Steve (Diane) Krebs of Solon, Iowa, and Brian Krebs of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Vivian Scheer; wife, Wendy Scheer in 2023; brother-in-law, Gordon Wilhelm; and an infant sister, Bernita.

The family would like to express heartfelt appreciation for the compassionate and supportive end-of-life care for Dean provided by Unity Point Hospice and To The Rescue. We have greatly appreciated the support, and very personal care, of many staff at Goodwill of the Heartland as well as the entire healing teams at Unity Point Clinic and St. Luke’s Hospital, including doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, physical therapists, and housekeepers.

We also extend a special thank you to First Lutheran Church for supporting Riders Club which enabled Dean and Wendy to attend worship on Sunday after Sunday for many years.
