David was born November 4, 1947, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Ned and Ardis (Nelsen) White. He grew up on the family farm in Walker, Iowa, before they relocated to Elkader, Iowa. He graduated from Central High School in Elkader in 1966, and soon after enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he was stationed in Sunnyvale, California.
