Dave was born August 16, 1940, in Central City, the son of Delmar and Evalena (Palmer) Sands. He married Lorraine Wells in 1961, and they were later divorced. He then married Rose Reed in 1969, and they divorced in 1975. Dave then married Wendy Hearn and she preceded him in death in 2003.
Dave loved being outdoors and earned the title of Eagle Scout as a young man. In his early years, he was an avid fisherman, hunter, and later added golfing and gardening to his interests. The life of a salesman suited Dave well, from an independent dealer for Harvest Store Silos, the new and used vehicles for Schoons in Anamosa. He was a devoted caregiver to his mother for several years. The Hawkeye Athletics teams provided good entertainment and some special trips for Dave and his friends and family.
