David E. Matthews

David E. Matthews, 88, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Thursday, January 15, 2015, at Living Center East, Cedar Rapids. Memorial Service: 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2015, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, conducted by Pastor Lloyd Brockmeyer. Family will greet friends from noon until service time. Inurnment at a later date in Fairview Cemetery, Earlville.
David was survived by his wife, Eunice of Cedar Rapids; sons, Mark Matthews of Dallas, John Matthews of Cedar Rapids, and Paul (Jeanne) Matthews of Marion; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
David was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister.
David was born on March 24, 1926, in Summerset, New York, son of Almaran and Nora (Perkins) Matthews. He graduated from high school in New York then he served in the United States Navy from 1944-1946. David then received his Masters at Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls. On June 10, 1951, he was united in marriage to Eunice L. Splinter, in Earlville. He taught at Waukon, Cedar Falls, and Oelwein before moving to Cedar Rapids where he taught industrial arts and drivers ed at Jefferson High School. He retired in 1988 after 35 years of teaching. David enjoyed painting and couple enjoyed dancing and belonged to the Harmonis 50’s Dance Club.
