David L. Marner Sr.
June 14, 1933 — April 30, 2023
David L. Marner, Sr., 89, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, took the hand of Jesus on Sunday, April 30, 2023. To God be the glory! “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7.
A celebration of David’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on June 7, 2023, at Antioch Christian Church, 433 Cross Road, Marion, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 2 - 4 p.m. following the celebration. Cremation and inurnment services provided by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids.
David was born June 14, 1933, in Riverside, Iowa, the son of Ray Marner, Sr. and Lydia Marner. From 1951 to 1955, David attended Coe College, graduating magna cum laude with degrees in political science and economics. He then attended the University of Iowa where he earned his Juris Doctorate in 1958. He served his country in the US Air Force JAG Corps for three years. David joined Richard Nazette and practiced law for over 50 years at the firm now known as Nazette, Marner, Nathanson & Shea LLP in Cedar Rapids. David was active in many local organizations and regularly attended several area churches.
On August 19, 1955, David married the love of his life, Pauline Frank. “And the two shall become one flesh; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh.” Mark 10:8. Pauline passed away in 2012 after 57 years of marriage. David was also preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Paula Schmidt; and siblings Sam Marner, Ray Marner, Jr., Gwen Fellner, and Glenys Good. Survivors include his sons, David L. Marner, Jr. and Trent (Wendy) Marner, of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Wreece, Kayla, Elijah, Aryn, Thaddeus, and Angelia; son-in-law, Mark Schmidt; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
David loved God and loved people. He treated his clients, friends, and even strangers with kindness and respect. David believed that all people are made in the image of God and took every opportunity to uplift others.
David loved living at Cottage Grove Place. The staff cared deeply, and loved and supported him for 12 years. David’s family wishes to thank the staff at Cottage Grove Place, his doctors, and other care providers. Their love and compassion was beyond measure.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like any donations to be made to Antioch Christian Church, Saint Stephen’s Lutheran Church, Westminster Presbyterian Church, or Calvin Sinclair Presbyterian Church. To all of you, “Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.” Titus 1:4.
